The japanese car companies have been operating in America for at least 40 years now with no major incidents that I am aware of

Okay, but here's the problem with that.
Car companies just do assembly at this point. Sure, the Japanese cars are assembled here, but the components are sourced from all over the world. Same with American cars. And most of the work is done by robots, not people.
