College Football playoff picture

I agree they need to not drag it out so long. I think that was a big part of the reason there was less interest in this year’s play Off
The playoff definitely underperformed as far as what was hoped in regards to ratings

Perhaps more will go back to network TV. Most of the top championships are still on network TV.

Horrible schedule.

13 days between first round and quarter finals?
I think that is because one week gives on team an advantage. It's six days rest versus seven. Or so the contention goes.

Making teams rest too long is bad. That’s why Oregon got whipped by Ohio St.. Oregon sat around for like 3 weeks

Which is odd because it provided far more compelling match ups than the bowl system.
I would say not at all.

Oregon vs. Notre Dame
Georgia vs. Texas

Would have been a good 4 team playoff.

The regular season should matter.

That’s not more (#) compelling games. And why would Texas get a third bite at the UGA apple if the regular season mattered? ND lost to unranked directional school (who ended up 4-4 in the MAC) and otherwise played no one all year. The current format is definitely flawed but it's better than the 4 team PO by a wide margin. This year proved that the top 4 teams in the rankings at the end of the year weren't the best 4 teams in the nation. Not one of them made the final. The top 2 lost their first game in the PO's. The regular season should mean something but it shouldn't mean everything.

It just proves that sitting for 3 weeks kills a team’s rhythm.. happens in the NFL a lot with a 2 week break 1st round bye. Detroit went down 1 and done

Give me a break. Oregon got run out of the stadium. You dont lose by 3 TD's because you were a little rusty. They were down 34-8 at the half. Georgia much the same. ND was just the better team, at least on that day. Arizona St had a bye took Texas to double OT. Detroit lost because the injuries on defense finally caught up with them.

The regular season has to matter to give the worthy teams the opportunity.

If you expanded the NFL playoffs you’d have an 8-8 team in the Super Bowl here and there because they got hot. Any team can get hot in the playoffs, but only the best teams should get the chance.

12 teams is less than 10%. 4 is 2%. On top of that the "rankings" are largely subjective (see ND) and predicated on history and what the "eye test" and let's be honest TV ratings (see Alabama, ND, Texas, etc.) You put Texas in a 4 team PO against a team they already lost to twice this year, and outside of UGA they played NO ONE. What was Texas's big win? 8-5 A&M? 7-6 Vandy? 6-7 OU? You also had ND in there who literally played zero good teams during the season and lost to a middling MAC team. If the NIU loss happens in week 11 vs week 2 you don't have them in the PO. That's how stupid the old format was. Same team same schedule same wins and losses but different time table and the ranking is different.

1 more point. Take West Point or Memphis, the players, schedule wins and loses everything about this past season and have them switch uniforms with Alabama, Mich, OSU, UGA, etc and they are ranked in the top 5 and in the PO's. Guaranteed. Memphis finished the year 24th. Army 21st. Easily a 15-20 place ranking delta based on helmet color.

Not at all top 5, although likely higher

The problem is there are like 140 teams in D1 football, and major programs play some of these doormats. There needs to be a standard and cutoff of team allowed to play to be considered for a championship.

That’s where you do this:
  • eliminate the NCAA
  • 2 independent mega conferences: the Big 10 and the SEC (like the AFL/NFL).. they can grow to 30-35 teams each for all I care
  • all of your games have to be played against either Big 10 or SEC opponents, yet SOS still matters a lot
  • Have Big 10 and SEC rankings… take the top 4 on each side.
  • the top teams are truly the top teams, and nobody played #122 San Jose St and won 77-3 for fraudulent wins

They basically resting the same amount of time (13 vs 14 days), so it's practically a wash.
