conservative case for increasing the state’s minimum wage to $12 per hour

Sure would like to see where a raise in minimum wage causes an increase in unemployment. Like how does 1% of the work force making minimum wage cause those making more to be laid off of their jobs.

Hows that work eflat?

One thing I have noticed since posting on here; if a number of you right winger repubs HAD a job paying you minimum wage, you all WOULD be overpaid.

But seriously, you Repubs are free to work for LESS than minimum wage. All you have to do is offer to pay back to your employer the money you were paid over the minimum wage. Do you do that e flat?

Hell offer to work for 5 buck an hour. You don't need no stinkin government setting your wages for you.

Work for less than minimum wage. Hey better idea, work for what you are worth e flat. Maybe 2 bucks an hour. Sound about right e flat. Are you worth 2 dollars an hour?

Actually that is called a kickback and is highly illegal.

Gov. Jerry Brown signed a measure last year that will make California’s minimum wage the highest of any state at the nation -- $10 per hour by 2016.

But that, Unz says, is not enough. He has a new ballot measure that would raise the state minimum wage to $12 per hour, a move Unz says could save the state tens of millions of dollars in welfare payments.

“The reason the current system operates is that there are massive government subsidies going to these low-wage employees,” he said. “Government essentially subsidizes low-wage businesses. They’re getting money from the taxpayer instead of standing on their own two feet.”

There's so many things wrong with that thinking it boggles the mind.

Increasing min will increase the cost of living, requiring a dem run state to increase welfare spending, which will req an increase in min wage, that will lead to an increase in cola, that will lead to an increase in welfare spending

Why is it that everyone except liberals, knows this?

The people that work these jobs are young. raising the min would force employers to seek more mature and reliable people, with work history. Allowing them to drop people from their staff.

plus companies that pay just above min would have to cut staff or pass the costs onto consumers, which also leads to a need to increase the min wage.

Then there is the ripple effect. People who were making above the minimum wage would now be making the minimum or close to it. These people would see their skills worth more than the minimum, demand higher wages, and this ripples up and up the wage chain.

Soon because the cost of labor goes up the cost of products and services go up, thus leaving the people with the increased wages the SAME BUYING POWER AS BEFORE OR WORSE due to inflation and increased costs.

And Progressives just don't seem to get this.

At 70 I'm out of the work force now and living on a fixed income.
Raising the minimum wage hurts people like me the most.

In my working career I lived through countless raisings of the minimum wage, and the axiom, the unarguable truth is when the minimum wage is raised it has a "trickle up effect", it bumps the whole pay scale up and raises the cost of everything manufactured, transported, stored, imported, exported, or given as charity. The price of everything goes up and people on fixed incomes don't get a raise in income, just a raise in cost.

Any benefit is temporary and miniscule.

The biggest threat to American security is the national Debt. -

Unz is a nut case and the title of the rag, " The American conservative" is (was?) nothing but a anti-war screed by the liberal faction of the republican party or a dirty trick by liberals. The "American conservative" actually urged voters to vote for democrats in 2006.

To the Federal Government, ALERT ALERT ALERT
Do you really want to help all Americans, especially the poor?

STOP SPENDING MORE THAN YOU HAVE! STOP MONETIZING THE NATIONAL DEBT! STOP BORROWING MONEY FROM OUR SWORN ENEMIES, OR ANY OTHER FOREIGN COUNTRY! STOP BORROWING MONEY PERIOD! START PAYING DOWN OUR CATASTROPHIC NATIONAL DEBT!
ENOUGH ALREADY! GO HOME AND HANG YOURSELVES LIKE ANYONE WITH A CONSCIENCE WOULD DO FOR WHAT YOU'VE DONE TO US!

Your statement that "The people that work these jobs are young" is cherry picked at best, but more than likely you've just been duped by Foxtainment.
The average minimum wage worker doesn't fit your stereotypical fantasy of which hourly workers will be affected but-----but you are correct that the percentage of workers affected is small and-----and most low wage workers live in the South.

The typical worker who would be affected by an increase in the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour by 2015 looks nothing like the part-time, teen stereotype: She is in her early thirties, works full-time, and may have a family to support. Our analysis of workers who would benefit from an increase in the minimum wage shows:
  • The average age of affected workers is 35 years old;
  • 88 percent of all affected workers are at least 20 years old;
  • 35.5 percent are at least 40 years old;
  • 56 percent are women;
  • 28 percent have children;
  • 55 percent work full-time (35 hours per week or more);
  • 44 percent have at least some college experience.
Claims that mostly teenagers would see a raise if the minimum wage were increased are sometimes based erroneously upon the official Bureau of Labor Statistics data on workers who are earning the federal minimum wage or below—i.e. workers earning exactly $7.25 per hour or less. These data do not provide an accurate picture of who would see a raise if the minimum wage were increased because they exclude all workers from the 19 states with higher state minimum wages, along with all workers making slightly above the current federal minimum wage but below the proposed minimum, all of whom would see a raise if the minimum wage were increased. Also, see a comprehensive analysis of the impact of raising the minimum wage in Raising the federal minimum wage to $10.10 would give working families, and the overall economy, a much-needed boost.

It doesn't cause others to be laid off. Duh. A higher minimum wage prevents employers from creating more jobs in the first place...jobs that could be carried out by low skilled and inexperienced workers...the very people you purport to want to help. Oh the irony!

Fewer jobs, more unemployment, more people on the dole.

One thing I have noticed since posting on here; if a number of you right winger repubs HAD a job paying you minimum wage, you all WOULD be overpaid.

That would be illegal, which is the point of standing against the minimum wage. A man should be free to work for what HE thinks is adequate. An employer should be free to pay was HE believes is necessary to attract and retain adequate results.

What you're suggesting prevents our most vulnerable citizens from working at all. And I can think of nothing more cruel or immoral.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

Hell offer to work for 5 buck an hour. You don't need no stinkin government setting your wages for you.

The employer would be in violation of the law and subject to civil action. He's better off not creating the low skill job in the first place, which is exactly why unemployment among teenagers and the uneducated is at historic levels.

Again, shame on you.

Work for less than minimum wage. Hey better idea, work for what you are worth e flat. Maybe 2 bucks an hour. Sound about right e flat. Are you worth 2 dollars an hour?
