A state religion? What’s next, North Carolina, secession?

Posted by Mary C. Curtis on April 4, 2013 at 9:31 am

As a North Carolina resident also proud to be a United States citizen, I’m starting to worry.

Since Republicans swept the North Carolina state government, from the statehouse to the House and Senate, the tilt right has been unmistakable. But the latest move out of Raleigh has even a lot of die-hard conservatives shaking their heads. Two representatives from Rowan County have submitted a resolution that would give North Carolina, its counties and towns the right to establish an official religion.

You know you’ve stepped over religious and constitutional boundaries when evangelist Franklin Graham thinks you’ve gone too far.
A state religion? What?s next, North Carolina, secession?

Apparently the first amendment isn't as important as the conservative "version" of the second amendment.

-Vaginal probes.
-Banning Abortion.
-Overriding popular vote and appointing emergency mangers.
-Outlawing collective bargaining.

And now this.

On a state level? Conservatives really show their colors when in power.

It is odd how they try to push through batshit crazy legislation they know doesn't have a chance......just to play to their base

We tried to make North Carolina a Christian state but the damned liberals wouldn't let us

Just thought that fact was important in keeping perspective...

2014 can't come quick enough.

Republicans can look forward to the "shellacking".

2014 & 2016 are going to be most interesting elections. Either the republicans jettison their religious base to save their party or republican relevance continues to decline.

Either way, it looks like the end of the codification of religious morals for the sake of religious morals is in sight. Yay!

Well if what's happening in the courts is any indication, Republicans trying to repeal the voter's rights act, they are pretty nervous.

What is it about the United States Constitution that the GOP Wingnuts hate it so much?

.

From the linked story:
The measure acknowledges the U.S. Constitution prevents Congress from establishing an official religion, but says that the prohibition does not apply to states, counties or towns.

A state religion? What?s next, North Carolina, secession?

So what do you think the Official Religion of NC will be? Southern Baptist? Maybe Catholic so they can drink? Could a small town or county garner enough votes to establish a local Jonestown?

:eusa_think: Quite the conundrum!

One can only maintain so much power through gerrymandering and intimidation - eventually they'll need to broaden the base or suffer irrelevance.

Moot, the bill has been withdrawn. Shame they had to let it see the light of day in the first place.

I hate to say this but I believe that legally states might have the right to establish an official religion.

Depends, I suppose, on the STATE constitution.

Also from the linked story:
In part, the bill reads: “The North Carolina General Assembly does not recognize federal court rulings which prohibit and otherwise regulate the State of North Carolina, its public schools, or any political subdivisions of the State from making laws respecting an establishment of religion.”

A state religion? What?s next, North Carolina, secession?

How fucking arrogant is that?!?

At some point their gerrymandering is going to collapse. That is why they are trying to perform the maximum damage they can right now

That IS good news! :eusa_eh: And bad news...

US Constitution has supremacy

It's not a state's "official religion" I worry about...

How soon before a state adopts an official corporate sponsor?

Of all the collapses I've been privileged to witness, ass-u-me-ing I'm still around in 2017, this will rank among my favorites.

Talk about the gerrymandered tail wagging the fucking dog!

There are only 2 parts they like..the second and tenth amendments, both of which, have been grossly misread.
