The price tag on universal health care is in, and it’s bigger than California’s budget

The price tag is in: It would cost $400 billion to remake California’s health insurance marketplace and create a publicly funded universal heath care system, according to a state financial analysis released Monday.

California would have to find an additional $200 billion per year, including in new tax revenues, to create a so-called “single-payer” system, the analysis by the Senate Appropriations Committee found. The estimate assumes the state would retain the existing $200 billion in local, state and federal funding it currently receives to offset the total $400 billion price tag.

the idea, on paper, is fine. in reality, how?

tax more "rich people"?

Well, this should be interesting. And I wonder if they included their illegal population in their calculations.

I love how the Big Pharma, corrupt Medical High expenses ....Unpaid medical bills, and the Emergency Rooms used like a doctors office are never mentioned.

Yes universal care needs a overhaul with some of the problems, but fix the problems not take away a healthcare that allows people to get treatment when they are sick, and not loose their homes and life savings..

The Emergency Room law alone is a big reason we are going down ....

The corrupt congress gets paid off by these Big Pharma companies who can charge what ever they want for a pill, while making it illegal to buy across the US border..So fu=king corrupt..

so how do we fix it by buying into it with forcing people to buy insurance which is the biggest reason it's all so expensive?

So how is it that the NHS in the UK cost £121 billion in 2009/2010 fiscal year, and in California it would cost $400 billion?

The NHS budget and how it has changed

Me thinks some people are trying to massively inflate the figures, or be misleading with the figures.

Did you know that the corrupted people including our paid off congress spend millions of dollars to lie to you..
Why do they want it gone so badly?

Did you know that you are already paying for all of the people above , and forgot to mention the corrupt insurance companies..

I can only tell you what I have seen in the hospitals over the last five years.

You think forcing people to have insurance is the reason it's so expensive?? I think your commenting rights on this topic should be revoked. Maybe just read for awhile. As Trump said, it's complicated.

Is the cost an assessment of the transition or of the yearly outlay? Big difference. I could see the transition costing multiples of the normal yearly operating cost with that large of a population.

Quit being a snowflake. This is the beauty of free speech. You can post any asinine comment you want. And I can tell you you're dumb.

Here's my magical baseless reason for why health care is expensive. Aliens. You can't prove otherwise. Checkmate.

Well, that's the point isn't it? People are throwing numbers around without explaining what the numbers actually mean. Which is misleading.

As I get close to retirement I think I will drop my opposition to single payer ins as long as it is funded by a massive increase in income tax.
