Cowardice: WSJ Editor Says His Newspaper Won’t Call Trump’s Lies ‘Lies’

Don't be so discouraged, CC. The media took a shellacking in general this past year and I believe they have learned something, if we give them a chance to right the ship.

The Slimes is struggling to even stay afloat
We're talking about the Wall Street Journal. They are owned by Rupert Murdoch, so no doubt part of the reason he prefers not to use the word "Lie."

My bad...the WSJ has jumped the shark a few times. All depends who's doing the Op Eds
I don't know what "jumped the shark" means, but even our liberal paper runs strongly Republican viewpoints and columns on their Op Ed pages, at times. Do you really support a paper which runs only pro-conservative pieces instead of reflecting the voices of all sides?

Cult members will NEVER call the falsehoods that their leader constantly speaks, as lies. We are approaching the Land of Fascism.

I read a lot of sites. It's kind of silly to be bemoaning some sites "run" only conservative views while there is Huffpo, Slate, The Atlantic, KOS, etc out there

Jump the shark means over the top

To me, if you're a magazine, go for whatever editorial stance you wish. I suppose a newspaper has the same choice, but major papers that provide the news to the majority of folks in their area should be more level in their reporting, I think. The Wall Street Journal IS, whether or not we like it, a very major paper with a huge readership. I read the Op Ed section every morning with my coffee, just to get my blood pumping. It's good for a thinking brain to have some challenges.

It won't be fascism as long as journalists can state the truth. It is up to us whether to listen. That's still free.

WASHINGTON ― Wall Street Journal Editor-in-Chief Gerard Baker said his newspaper would not refer to false statements from the Trump administration as “lies,” because doing so would ascribe a “moral intent” to the statements.

Baker appeared on NBC’s “Meet The Press” Sunday, where he described some of President-elect Donald Trump’s falsehoods as “questionable” and “challengeable.” But, he said, “I’d be careful about using the word ‘lie.’ ‘Lie’ implies much more than just saying something that’s false. It implies a deliberate intent to mislead.”

He said reporters should state the facts, but leave classifying them to readers, citing the example of Trump’s claim that thousands of Muslims in New Jersey were celebrating on 9/11 (which is false).

“I think it’s then up to the reader to make up their own mind to say, ‘This is what Donald Trump says. This is what a reliable, trustworthy news organization reports. And you know what? I don’t think that’s true.’”

The New York Times editorial board has used “lie” to describe Trump’s rampant abuse of facts. And Washington Post conservative columnist Jennifer Rubin has taken the media to task for not using the word. Other outlets ― including MSNBC,New York Magazine and HuffPost ― will use the word when it’s merited.

But Baker said that in doing so, “you run the risk that you look like you are, you’re not being, objective.”

A lie is a lie - and should not be left to "intent" or "interpretation"!

Trump says "I have said a million times...".

Yes, it's a very sad time for American democracy. I suspect it will get very ugly.

I wholeheartedly agree, but "truth" is subjective. Is the truth many journalist report viewed through left, or right, colored glasses? True reporting should only consist of who, what, why, and when with a sprinkling of how. It must be up to the reader to decide what they believe and what they feel about the story. Unfortunately papers like the NY Time and the WaPo allow their reporters to editorialize their news articles in an attempt to force the reader to a certain viewpoint. This tends to be a practice from both side of the isle.

True, if they can overcome the threats, the belittling, the harassment....wait...this isn't Russia....right?

No wonder Stump idolizes Putee...?

We're a Republic, not a Democracy thank God.

Funny. I suggest you do a little more research on the topic. You are probably also uninformed about the socialist institutions in America and how they enrich our lives.

Is the United States of America a republic or a democracy?

Yeah, but Huffpo didn't count on so many ignorant anarchist cult members voting for Adolf Trump. Even Trump's internal polling missed that.
