CPAC Presidential Straw Poll Picks Guy Who Thinks Whites-Only Lunch Counters Should Be Legal

CPAC Presidential Straw Poll Picks Guy Who Thinks Whites-Only Lunch Counters Should Be Legal | ThinkProgress

With 31 percent of the vote, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) won the closely watched Conservative Political Action Conference presidential straw poll this weekend, dwarfing second place finisher Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) 11 percent of the vote.
The son of libertarian icon and former Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX), Rand Paul has emerged as the nation’s leading spokesperson for an anti-government philosophy that would undo nearly all the accomplishments of the New Deal and the Civil Rights Era. As a Senate candidate in 2010, Paul came out against the Civil Rights Act of 1964′s bans on private discrimination — including the bans on employment discrimination and whites-only lunch counters — claiming that the right of “private ownership” should trump African Americans’ and other minorities’ right to be free from invidious discrimination. Permitting private discrimination, according to Paul, is “the hard part about believing in freedom.”
Nor are Paul’s libertarian views limited to his skepticism towards civil rights protections. In 2013, Paul endorsed a long-ago overruled Supreme Court decision called Lochner v. New York. The Court’s Lochner opinion relied on a fabricated “right to contract” that it and subsequent cases used to strike down various laws protecting workers from exploitative employers — on the idea that if a worker signs a contract that forces them to work 16 hours a day for barely subsistence wages then it would somehow violate the worker’s rights to pay them more money for fewer hours work.

You ever been to Memphis?

One thing you see is a giant sign saying BUY BLACK Now this is a few years ago. But lets deal with it.

BUY BLACK Don't buy white. Buy black.

Are those signs still up there?

Since Rand Paul won three of the last four cpac straw polls, they seem to mean just as much as the the winner of the Ohio straw poll before the last general.

That was Michelle Bachmann and she bought the votes.

Seriously, does it really matter who wins this not-real poll held at a gathering of the most far right in the country?

That's actually the first sensible thing you've posted in all my time here.

Who cares? Maybe Paul will run. Maybe Paul will be the nominee. Maybe Paul will do a good job explaining to people that having freedom also means having freedom to do things you personally may not like. We accept that because the opposite of freedom is slavery and fascism. Which is what Democrats represent.

Paul said the hard part about freedom is allowing people to make their own choices.

I suppose next we'll have black only or Hispanic only caucuses or black only college funds. Don't you hate things that discriminate against other races?

There are blacks who hate whites and would prefer to leave them out of certain things. They have that right. Don't see any white entertainers at the BET awards. That means they are exclusive.

Equal rights means we all have the same right to pursue happiness and we all have freedom. It doesn't ever mean that any of us have the right for force others to pay our way or accept us in their groups. Sucks that some are like that, but that's how it is.

I'd rather everyone be treated equal, but apparently not everyone sees it that way, even the left. It was liberals against equal rights to begin with and the attitude is not indigenous to one group. Most on the right I know don't have that stupid superiority complex. I see it more on the left and not surprisingly, the left is a bit louder about it when they see it on the right. I guess the rest of us are so used to seeing it on the left that we don't think anything of it.

Hell Rep Steve Cohen wanted to join the Congressional Black Caucus because most of his constituents are lower class black people and he shares their concerns. They told him No, it was blacks only. Discrimination? You decide.

The only matter of interest is that the cpac thing is of such interest to the gop. Personally, I view it more as "oh holy shite, another tea bagger nut job, just marvelous."

based on that, at least 40% of americans are tea bagger nut jobs--------but they are not, they are patiotic americans who love freedom and the constitution. They are fed up with socialism and its destruction of our country. By 2016 that 40% could very easily be more than 60%.

the american people are not as stupid as you libs think they are.

Last night I was posting so tired. Cripes I absolutely cannot believe what I see on a day to day up here. So forgive me when some days I don't make much sense just because I am so tired.

McConnelly means a lot to me. I used to live in a place called Nunnelly Tennesse. I am a Boone a serious lol kick ass Boone. He has sold out so big to the whole territory and now the old son of a bitch is threatening those that gave him power?

I don't care that the tea partier wins. It would be my druthers. If not, I just want to see the old man freaking lose.

Having been in Nunnelly for so long I know this territory very well. Any one wanting to get rid of Mitch by all means get hold of me.

If you don't like Rand Paul's opinion on something, just wait five minutes.

What is your problem with him. I just cannot wait.

Let's seeeeee...

One day he's filibustering imaginary bomb-laden domestic drones. Literally the next day he's okay with a drone gunning down a liquor store holdup man. A liquor store holdup man. Hmmm...I wonder if that is some kind of black stereotype...

Then there is his scheme to bilk rubes out of their cash by starting a bogus "class action suit" against the NSA. He's taking advantage of their ignorance. There are already two large cases against the NSA which are quite a ways along. This was a pathetically obvious attempt to get cash for his personal gain.

Then there are Paul's contradictory positions on Syria.

And then there was his contradictory opposition to the sustained growth rate cuts to physicians.

Hope I didn't keep you waiting too long.

By all means give me the links.

The GOP will not select a candidate who cannot or will not defend the difference between private association and public accommodation in service.

This thread is a perfect example of liberal horseshit. Not a word of truth in it. full of libtardian lies and innuendo.

Paul is for FREEDOM for everyone. EQUAL freedom for everyone.

What you assholes refuse to understand is that there is a price for real freedom. The price is that you are responsible for your actions, you are responsible to take care of yourself (unless you are truly mentally or physically unable).

The free cheese may be ending for you leeches, the american people are fed up with you.

One of your democrat heroes said it quite well "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country" JFK understood freedom, obozo and most of you do not.

What do you think JFK meant when he said that?

That we should not have social programs?

of course not, he understood the danger of a dependency society. to paraphrase what he was saying "don't be a leach, get out and work for your country and we will all benefit".

social programs should be there for everyone who NEEDS them, but not for everyone who WANTS them.

do you see the difference?

you are correct, the OP is a pile of shit, nothing but lies. None of the potential GOP candidates supports the right to refuse service based on race, sex, ethincity, or any other criteria.

But knowing how you feel on this, why is there not outrage about BET (black entertainment television) and the BLACK miss america pagent? What would you say about a WET or a WHITE miss america pagent?

the hypocrisy of the left is amazing.

The GOP will not select a candidate who cannot or will not defend the difference between private association and public accommodation in service.

I hope. But, I suspect the RW has now given us another wedge issue that will enrage the right who will then refuse to support the nominee.

don't lose any sleep over it, this is nothing but bullshit talking points from the lefties.

I say, run with it.

I didn't decide I was Libertarian leaning because I had to pick a party. I slowly became this way based on years of taking information and doing my best to understand it.

That is what will happen to any country off and on. People that would never vote for anything but Democrats will for second one hate Libertarians because well, they're not Democrats.

I love the idea of you hate filled racist liberals putting issues like this out in front of the masses, millions, tens of millions will see the truth. These people would have otherwise not have been subjected to the reality of freedom. We are starting from a small group and growing here, so bring it. I'm not scared of people leaving the Libertairian party or way of thought, I understand we will gain millions of new members and or help many more millions understand that freedom means sometimes dealing with people you don't agree with... Freedom means that Government can't make it law that blacks eat at a different table.

The ultimate racist entity has been Government in this country, not someone arguing that forcing people to serve people they don't want too won't actually crate any amount of less raciest people. Those that support larger Government are in fact far more racist and dividing that Rand Paul on his worst day.

One of your democrat heroes said it quite well "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country" JFK understood freedom, obozo and most of you do not.

Yes, your country asks you to follow Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

If you have a problem with that, perhaps this is NOT the country for you.

Rand Paul is racist scum.
in this day and age we don't need the Civil Rights Act. Nobody is going to be discriminated against. Nobody is going to be told to get up from a lunch counter or find another place to lodge. However businesses will once again have a right to refuse service to anyone. Mind your P's and Q's and you can get served anywhere.

It's grimly comical that you would have the indecency, not to mention the ignorance, to involke the name of President Kennedy in this conversation,

given that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was essentiallly the end product of JFK's initiatives in civil rights.

yes, it was, you reinforced my point, thanks.

Kennedy was NOT a raving far left liberal. He had the intelligence to understand that making citizens dependent on the govt was a reciipe for disaster.

the civil rights act would not have passed without GOP votes. Dems fillibustered against it. you really need a short course in american history.

Those Democrats against it were CONSERVATIVES. They were Zell Miller Democrats.

Kennedy was more liberal in his day than Obama is today. Go read his New Frontier platform and maybe you can stop posting such stupid shit.
