The NICS system is the mandated background check for all gun purchases...and yes, even at gun shows...and it is an interesting record...why...because you can track the crime rate with the number of times people may be buying guns...a direct causation of a lower crime rate...maybe, maybe not...but is it a coincidence that more people are getting checked through the system...possibly meaning more people are owning...and carrying guns...and the crime rate is going down....

At a minimum, if people are buying and carrying more guns it debunks one of the great bitching and whining complaints of the anti gun movement...that more guns in the hands of law abiding citizens will mean more gun murders and crime in general...time after time this is shown to be just wrong...and the anti gunners hate this...

2013 NC Crime At Its Lowest Since 1974 Extrano s Alley a gun blog

Briefly quoting the News Record report linked above:

According to the data, overall crime in North Carolina decreased by 7 percent in 2013 from the previous year, continuing a six-year downward trend, according to a state Department of Public Safety news release issued on Wednesday.

Checking the 2012 FBI numbers, I see NOrth Carolina has actually done better than that. The violent crime rate was 448.9 in 1974, with a homicide rate of 11.7 per 100,000 population. The 2012 violent crime rate was down to 353.4, a 21.3 percent decline; and the homicide rate was 4.9, an outstanding 48.1 percent decline.

The FBI Uniform Crime Report for 2013 has not been released, but North Carolina’s crime trend seems the norm. While there are always some places with a minor uptick in crime, they seem far outnumbered by places with a substantial reduction in crime.

Not at all curiously, the States showing the greatest long term decrease in crime rates tend to be the same States showing the greatest increase in NICS ‘instant background checks.”

So congratulations are due North Carolinian’s and to North Carolina’s gun dealers; who take a bit out of crime with every gun sold.
