Old idea actually. SETI uses it to enable computing across home users computers crunching data their own 'in-house' computers wouldn't be able to as fast. SET@Home it's called. Is a similar one but for medical research.

Another version is law enforcement asking the public for videos and pics they may have taken in the vicinity of a crime like kidnappings so they go through them to see if anyone they know is seen.
