I guess on some level I understand them insisting on defending men playing in women's sports.

It is because they must not concede that there is any real difference between male and female, other than their state of mind. Otherwise, their ideology that a trans male or female can be 100% the other sex if they so choose would be shattered.

But reality rears it's ugly head as trans women dominate women's sports and biological women are unable to compete with biological men, showing everyone the insanity of their position.
