Different peoples thought about it differently. High peoples considered themselves children of the sun, hence the word soul.
and others had air and alcohol as a base. these were low races, forest savages of Europe and the like. Hence the words spirit and slavic "dusha"

The purpose of God is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. So, the reason is we are literal spirit children of our Father and Mother in Heaven. This is the divine essence of man and woman. We lived with our Heavenly Parents but could not progress to inherit our Father's kingdom. So, a plan was provided to come down to a prepared earth and experience physical life and all the good and bad possible. We chose to come here. A third of our brothers and sisters chose not to and ended up with Lucifer in a state of Perdition forever.

Whenever we have been born since Adam and Eve we have laws and commandments given to us by God through prophets that we are to keep. Because of free moral agency which is the right to choose for ourselves good or evil, sin was going to happen to all who come here. Wickedness cannot be present in Heaven with God. So, a Savior was provided who upon our personal repentance would wash away our sins through his atonement if we are baptized by water and spirit with proper authority to do so.

If we progress and become more faithful keeping the commandments and laws we are born into, after judgment and resurrection of our spirits and bodies, we can obtain Salvation or Exaltation in Heaven. There, we will progress based upon the kingdom part of Heaven we obtain, Celestial, Terrestrial or Telestial. If we deny the Holy Ghost at judgement day, we will not be divine and in heaven. We will be subject to Perdition and be sons of Perdition (Lucifer-Satan). The choice is yours.
