Was our role a couple generations ago. But I was under the impression Reconstruction concluded a while ago?

Could argue we're still in countries we once waged war with as a kind of trophy. We weren't interested in actually taking over the countries but part of being the victor is being magnamimous.

I don't think we need to be in as many countries as we actually are, but a toe hold's a toe hold. It's like aircraft carriers, force projection around the world. Don't have to spend 24 hours just getting somewhere because we have a base right there.

The world's so interconnected now via business and politics this sort of involvement with other countries is unavoidable. It's like the "Island Hop" map in Starcraft 1. You move your forces from island to island, set up production facilities for hardware then move foward to another island. You try staying on your home island and your oponent moves fromisland to island taking over the entire map then finally comes for you with vastly more resources than you have staying at home.
