Florida woman shot at Starbucks by friend who forgot gun was in her purse

Police say a loaded handgun in a Florida woman’s purse accidentally discharged when she dropped it in a St. Petersberg’s Starbucks on Saturday. The bullet from 51-year-old Pamela Beck’s gun struck her friend, 38-year-old Amie Peterson, above the knee. The wound was not serious and Peterson was released from the hospital late Saturday night.

Beck, who does not have a concealed weapons permit, told police that the gold-plated .25 caliber semi-automatic pistol had been given to her by her father a year ago, for protection, and that she had forgotten that she placed the gun in a spare purse. Before leaving for the Tyrone Square Mall in which the Starbucks was located, she switched purses to the spare one.

St. Petersburg Police spokesman Mike Puetz said that her purse “hit the ground hard” and the gun fired.

Another victory for Wayne LaPierre. All those permits and paperwork are too much hassle for teabrains, and the NRA encourages dimwitted members to ignore the rules.

So if the person had a CCW permit and dropped a purse and had the firearm discharge you would be 100% OK with that just because the paperwork was done?

Not seeing a comment from the NRA in this article at all.

Sounds like we are getting more spin.

This has nothing to do with the NRA or with guns in general. This was the result of this woman being a total fucking dunce.

Why was the safety off?
Why was a round chambered?
Why was the hammer cocked? (I say that because there is virtually no way a gun will fire from being dropped, unless the hammer is cocked)

Could be the article itself is fabricated bullshit.

It's safer to let a falling gun drop to the ground than try to catch it because you run the risk of accidently catching the trigger.

FYI... the Gun Control Act of 1968 made drop-safety tests mandatory.

Good points, and it happened in a Starbucks no less.

(My bold)

The article's not clear - did she know when the purse fell that the gun was in it? Or did she remember once she shot her friend? Yah, she could be charged with reckless endangerment, carrying a weapon without a CCL, assault with a deadly weapon, etc.

I'd like to prosecute her for poor gun handling - what kind of maniac carries a round up the spout? Was the safety even on? (& could she ID the safety if she had to?) & doesn't even remember that she's carrying, let alone exercise good gun control.

@ the v. least, she should be sentenced to mandatory handgun lessons. Somebody should inspect that handgun - it probably hasn't been cleaned nor fired since she's had it, except the once. Fine her enough to cover the CCL application & handgun training, & send her to handgun safety/marksmanship training, please.

Hey, careful where you point that purse ...

These things happen. Oh well.

If the story is true -
This woman was carrying a gun illegally - should be arrested.
She has no training with guns - apparent
She needs to go to an NRA sponsored/affiliated training class (most are)
She needs to be aware enough to safely carry a gun if that is what she wants to do - I doubt that is her intent)
She needs to apply for a concealed carry permit if she wants to carry her gun concealed.

She needs a good spanking for being ignorant.

Hey, careful where you point that purse ...

I'm guessing the gun didn't get there by itself so either she put it in there or someone did without her knowledge. I'd go with the former being more likely.

Everyone I know carries with a round in the chamber including all police officers. It's nothing more than a hammer without a round ready.

Not all handguns have external safeties.

You don't know much about guns do you?

What was the woman wearing, a hoodie? Will the Smithsonian buy her outfit too?

Meanwhile hundreds are killed in car-accidents.

She 'forgot' the gun was in her purse?

Either she is lying, or she's stupid.
