[Its all about keeping a record of what you spend per year, versus what you report to the IRS as income. The NSA has every phone call you made and every e-mail you sent, so keeping that in mind, how is it that you bought 1.5 million in goods and services last year but only reported a total $28,000 in income from welfare benefits and food stamps? And silly you thought all the surveillance was just Comrade Barack's benevolent way of learning who was naughty and who was nice to him so he could know whose stocking to put coal into on Christmas morn. Welcome to 1984. Barack is so sweet and so kind and understanding isn't he? We're in a government electronic surveillance cage right now just like the apes in the Great Apes cage at the Bronx Zoo ]

"The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has spent more than $20 million “collecting and tracking spending habits of more than 10 million Americans,” Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, said in a letter last month to the agency seeking information about its work. As a result, the Government Accountability Office has begun an investigation of the scope of the data collection and privacy protections at the 2-year-old agency. It was created as part of the 2010 Dodd-Frank banking reform law to ensure that consumers are protected from predatory credit agencies and mortgage lenders. “Many Americans are understandably unsettled by news reports about the National Security Agency’s widespread monitoring of telephone and Internet traffic,” Diane Katz, a research fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation, wrote on the think tank’s website. “Attracting far less attention is the rampant snooping of a more personalized nature carried out daily” by the consumer protection bureau. So not only is the government collecting your phone records and (possibly) reading your emails, they’re also tracking your shopping habits. What kind of Orwellian nightmare is this? "

I see the banking industry is still working overtime to prevent itself from being regulated through its bought-and-paid-for useful idiots in Congress like Crapo. God forbid their profitable predatory practices should be halted.

How are regulators going to know where Americans are being preyed upon if they don't gather information of the types of credit and investment services we use?

This is not wiretapping your phone.
