Four summers ago, then-Democratic Rep. Artur Davis of Alabama delivered a nominating speech in support of Barack Obama. The Illinois senator's election as party standard-bearer takes us closer to becoming what we know America can be," he said at the Denver convention.
But times have changed in the intervening years -- especially for Davis himself. Now a Virginia Republican, he spent part of Thursday afternoon at the home of a Northern Virginia family talking about how Obama failed the country on the economy, and how he believes presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney is best equipped to revive it.
The former congressman recalled Obamas campaign pledges to rein in government spending and lessen the countrys dependence on credit. Those were powerful sounding, tough words from a Democratic candidate in 2007 and 2008 who was trying, frankly, to reach out to the center, Davis said. Well, I think we all know, four years later, candidate Obama has been a very different person than President Obama.
