There's no evidence Fred was a Klan "member". What there is evidence for is that he was among those arrested at a Klan rally in the 1920s. In that period the Klan was all about anti-immigrant and anti-labor union, which is presumably what drew Fred, as well as anti-black, anti-Catholic, anti-Jew and anti-drinking.

That was the same period the Klan endorsed Coolidge and Hoover and pushed to get Republican governors elected in Maine, Indiana, Colorado, Kansas and California as well as scores of smaller offices. So nothing in that indicates "Democrat".
