Good place for gun statistics…

if someone uses a gun to try to commit suicide, there is a 90% chance they will succeed. That seems to bother a lot of gun nuts.

I don't think anyone should commit suicide. I hope nobody "likes" people killing themselves...but apparently you're a fan.

If you jump off of a building...at 7 stories you have a 90% chance of dying.....you doofus.

So....a fall from 7 stories = 90% chance of killing you....

Now, to use anti-gun fanatic logic.

This means we have to tear down all buildings taller than 7 stories....

Or...

Mentally ill people cannot go into any building taller than 20 ft.

Or....

Buildings can not longer be "high capacity," they must be built with only 2 stories or lower....

Or....

Buildings can no longer be "high capacity," all buildings must now be built below ground...

If someone steps off of a tall building it is 90% likely to kill them, and they can't fly back if they change their mind.

If someone steps in front of a train, it is 90% likely to kille them, and they can't stop the train like Superman......

And 9 out of 10 suicide attempts involving firearms are successful according to your link. Do you disagree?

Statistics prove it. They also prove that only a small fraction if mental illness have been diagnosed.

As you demonstrate
So you ASSUME a person who commits suicide is mentally ill even of there is no diagnosis.

It's still a choice that every single person has the absolute right to make.

Yep....as are the deaths by Japanese, South Korean and Chinese suicide victims.

Well, your link is only about US statistics...right?

Do yo disagree that 9 out of 10 times, if a gun is used in a suicide attempt, it is successful? It's from YOUR LINK.

Yeah? And....? Jumping from 7 stories is also 90% effective.....which is one way the Japanese and South Koreans rack up more suicide than we do......

You have no rational point.

Again...you have to explain how it is that Japan, South Korea and China have higher suicide rates than we do........please...try.

Japanese...South Koreans....China...

If there is an award for derailing your own thread...I think you've earned it.

From your source:

* During 2007–2014, the fatality rate of those who attempted suicide via:

  • firearm was 90%.
Meaning that 90% of the time, if someone tries suicide via firearm, they succeed.

The next highest most prevalent choice of suicide that was successful was drowning

  • drowning was 56%.
meaning that about 1/2 the time those that tried drowning, lived through the foolish attempt to kill one self.

Accoding to NAMI, 46% of those who die by suicide have diagnosed mental illness. Considering that most do not seek formal counseling--only about 1 in 5 seek counseling of any kind and 9.5% seek formal counseling, the 46% is just the tip of the iceberg.

Bottom line...mental illness and guns do not mix well.

Suicide is irrelevant.

But go ahead. Used hollow points.

Uh...no. According to NAMI, about 1/2 have DIAGNOSED mental illness.

According to the Mayo Clinic, most mental illnesses are not diagnosed.
Bullshit.

Our definitions of mental illness are invented by people who want to get everyone on some kind of medication
