Today is the birth date of an awe inspiring pioneer by the name of Marcus Garvey. This man is the most important influence on all liberation movements in Africa and the Americas. A measure of his impact is the influence he had on such leaders as MLK, Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela etc etc. This is the first Black man to recognize that even though divided by white propaganda, geography, and language Blacks all share a couple of things in common. Our Black roots in Africa, our ability to succeed and survive while under duress and our indomitable spirit. Marcus Garvey is the first Black man to openly challenge the status quo here in the US and advocate Black nationalism. A true giant of the RBG movement he will always be revered.

Marcus Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), “the most dynamic mass movement across territorial borders among the African peoples [during] the 20th century.” According to international.ucla.edu: “By the early 1920s the UNIA could count branches in almost every Caribbean, [latin America], and sub-Saharan African country with membership swelling to 8 million.”

It's not just about the liberation of the body, or the community, it's about liberating the mind and the soul. This is a very important story for all people, to free their minds. He was a true prophet. Greatly missed.

This man, Marcus Mosiah Garvey, first uttered those words in a speech he gave in Nova Scotia, Canada in October 1937. In his speech Garvey declared:

“We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery because whilst others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind. Mind is your only ruler, sovereign. The man who is not able to develop and use his mind is bound to be the slave of the other man who uses his mind …”
