In the late 1800's my grandmother was brought to the west in a wagon. She passed in 1975. As she lived her life she saw electricity move into the house, along with telephones, radios, TV's, air conditioning, forced air heating, refrigerators, gas stoves, and microwave ovens. Even home computers were starting to be introduced. Outside she saw automobiles, airplanes be introduced as well as men walking on the moon.

In my life I cannot think of many life technological introductions as I get up in years that are true life changers. We have smart phones, which we use to send pictures of cats with and text while driving. We have some noninvasive medical diagnostic devices. We have internet that is primarily used for pornography and ordering Christmas gifts. But pretty much everything is just a faster and improved version of what already existed 50 years ago. Cars are still cars, planes just fly faster and further, my TV gets Netflix but it's still a TV. But today America can't get a man into space, I will be lucky to obtain the lifespan of my grandparents, our education system vs what kids were learning a century ago is pathetic, roads and bridges take 10x longer to build, etc etc. There have been very few life changing technologies introduced in the last 50 years.

I think humanity hit a ceiling sometime around 1970.
What say you?

If things are constantly getting improved, isn't that progress?

I kinda agree with the OP.
While we've improved a lot of things we haven't had any life changing tech in a long time.
I believe the world will have gone to shit long before we come up with solutions to solve our current problems.
I tend to think we already have those solutions. We are just ruled by a certain kind of people. For instance, how many amateur flying/water cars have you seen? Hell, they probably have the tech to create good solar powered cars.
Those are just examples of course.
The same can be applied to fiscally as well. The ones that rule us, don't want it. Perhaps socially, too.

Are you sure? Massive changes and improvements constantly. Cars drive themselves, Back up cameras, GPS, who knows what Defense has, scanners, 20M pixel cameras, 2GHZ PC........just off top of my head.

The farther we get in space, the more we understand space, will improve our lives for the better.
That's why I don't get why people want to cut space exploration.

Thats a good point.
I'm sure there's a bunch of stuff we dont know about and never will because it would curtail the power of government.

the world is a million times better now.... unless you're an old white Christian male who wants everyone else subservient.

then maybe it isn't so good. I think normal people are ok with that.
Really?

yes, really. you think women being property and unfettered domestic abuse was a good thing? you think imbeciles outlawing interracial marriage and contraceptive use was a good thing?

meh.....

indeed.
Honestly, I wouldn't doubt if we had the cures for some types of cancer. That's how shitty some people are.
Then again, population control, I guess. IDK lol

The only way space becomes a legit exploration goal is if we can overcome the limits on the speed of light.
The distances involved are just to great otherwise.

Your comments about the internet are amusing, but IMO, the Internet, smart phones, I-pads, Kindles and a bunch of stuff I'm too old to know about have really changed our lives. The internet is a fantastic tool for learning, communicating instantaneously, and how about those cell phones with cameras that catch cops shooting unarmed citizens? I'm no techno wizard; I don't even know how to give myself an avatar on this board. But I do respect the huge leaps in technology our younger folks seem born knowing how to use.

Absolutely. But why restrict them with budget "concerns"?
NASA made the world 10X better.
Probably added 15 years to average life expectancy by itself lol
IDK maybe I don't understand the process with that.

WIFI, Tablets, face time phone calls, PC on wristwatch............Li-ion batteries weeks of life, electric cars

Tech has been a disaster in many ways as well. Like how an EMP could cause the weak American sheep to go into chaos and start killing themselves/each other because the narcissists cant check their fuckin facebook.
