Welcome to 'Gay Paris' - gays flock to marry in French capital. Nearly one in seven marriages in capital now between same-sex couples
'Gay Paris’ is living up to form as new laws allowing same sex marriage lead to nearly one in seven weddings in the French capital taking place between homosexual couples.
Figures from the national statistics office for 2013 show that the rest of the country lags far behind Paris in the same sex marriage stakes, at just 3 percent of the total.
Gay marriage was made legal in France in May 2013 despite bitter opposition from conservatives and massive street protests.
Figures on same-sex unions from the Paris city hall that that a total of 1,331 gay couples got married in 2014 in Paris, or 13.5 percent of the total. The figures also mirror the political dividing line that runs right down the middle of the city, separating the conservative west from the Left-leaning east.
Most gay marriages - 72 percent - took place in arrondissements with Socialist mayors east of that line, with around a third of the total celebrated in the 4th arrondissement, which is home to the Marais area. Marais has in recent years become one of the most fashionable neighbourhoods of Paris, packed with designer boutiques and the capital’s biggest concentration of gay bars.
