One of the hardest parts of being a Ranger is passing Ranger Qualification.
Once you've done that you can volunteer to go to a Ranger Batt....but not everyone who passed the course is allowed to be assigned to that position. Still, If he wore the tab....he's a Ranger.

My guess is because he was a junior officer serving in combat units....he had more combat experience, or the same combat experience as the folks serving in the 75th. It all depends.
