Well, it all exists on a continuum. So, Venezuela would be on the end of the spectrum, while Norway, Germany and France would be closer to the center of that continuum. Yep, it's more or less down to the Democrats have to beat Trump not the other way around since he's the known quantity.
I suspect if they go with some far left "Democratic" Socialist Trump will get a second term, if they find somebody that's a more "traditional" Democrat then Trump may be in for a hard election.

Except for the fact that Norway, Germany., France all have different cultures, traditions, institutions and forms of government than the U.S. (so it's not a "what's good for the goose is good for the gander question") and that the Scandinavian countries have been tactically retreating from "democratic socialism" for the last decade primarily because it hasn't proven to be sustainable in a globally competitive environment.Well, it all exists on a continuum. We have elements of fascism (private ownership, government control) combined with an oversized welfare state, not the same thing as public ownership of the means of production that sits at the heart of the classic definition of socialism.And of course, there are already elements of socialism in America.

Higher taxes. Which most Americans do not want.
Eventually you run out of other people's money to spend.
As has already been stated the government does not own the major companies that create wealth. So to go with socialism you would need more then sixty percent of your income in taxes. That does not even take into consideration the damage done to the insurance companies and others.
