There have been various reports that soon after taking "office," Trump has been in touch with Anthony Kennedy to cajole him into retirement.
Trump knew that the mere replacement of Scalia with Gorsuch, was not enough to slant the SCOTUS into a judicial arm of the conservatives........Trump wanted another seat.
Now, although Kennedy is not that much older than Thomas, Trump well knew that Thomas has always been just a de facto vote for conservative causes......and unlike Kennedy who has.....on a few occasion...exercised judicial objectivity........was a better target to convince to retire.
But, there were other reasons why Kennedy was the target......Kennedy would support Trump's choice of Kavanaugh because this guy had clerked with Kennedy....AND because there are still some loose connections between Trump (the funds' borrower) with Kennedy's son (the funds' lender.)
Bottom line is this....some backroom dealings must have gone on between the oval office and Kennedy's office, and the theatrical debate about the other potential nominees were just that...theater for us to think that Trump was debating choices, where the choice had been made to pick Kavanaugh, almost from day one after the SCOTUS went on vacation.
