To answer why they would sign the letter… because it was a month before the election and these stories come out alleging everything from child rape to conspiratorial business dealings with no vetted proof behind them. Plus intel agencies were seeing massive disinformation campaigns coming from Russia for the past two elections. So their statement was true.
