The point should be to anyone with half a brain, that Trump was in talks with Putin 4 years ago.....but this invasion pretty much has made him a pariah and anything that Trump may have said about him in 2018 is off the table and is erased completely. He told Putin to stay out of Ukraine or he was willing to bomb Moscow....so Putin stayed out of Ukraine.
Trump always likes to be nice to assholes so he can negotiate deals with them. He doesn't see the need for name-calling and talking trash about people you're trying to work out deals with.
