I feel that anyone who wants to hold federal office must be a veteran of the United States Armed Forces. How many current members of Congress have had the moral courage to serve the nation that has given so much to them and the world? (Btw...I think military service should be a requirement to vote.)

Let me guess......you are a veteran.

I'd like to see a return to a draft , so yeah no problem with the voting requirement .

Bush I and II were vets and look how THAT turned out.

Obama, not a Vet. Complete failure as well.

Maybe Americans should just stop watching Sports and Gossip Shows and just get more involved in Local Government?

Wow! You are great! And you deserve to vote more than I do because I never joined the military! Please.....oh please.....let me walk behind you.

You might want to do a little research about what you signed up to protect dumb ass.

Enemies of the United States foreign and domestic. The greatest threat to our nation right now is domestic. Ancient Athens had this requirement. So an illegal, foreign national, has a right to participate in the same democracy I do? You want to bitch about the direction of America...show your courage to defend her and the Constitution.

Bush I was a man of honor.
In WWII he was. Took balls to fly a slow torpedo bomber against all those Japanese ships.

As President though, he was an ex-CIA P.O.S.
I think he is our most underrated President next to James Knox Polk. His handling of end of Cold War, Panama, and Gulf War was brilliant.

I think he'd take one look at what you write here and punch you in the face.

I don't.

I used to hold the same opinion but I've since changed my mind. I held that opinion because I hypothesized that a military man would demonstrate more self-sacrifice in their style of governance but then when I looked at the data I really didn't see any difference. This would be a policy move which yielded not benefit to society.

The problems of our society go much deeper such that a quick fix like that which you propose won't be a solution.

Perhaps you are correct. The current military allows all types of leftist behaviors. Could be a danger since the inception of socialist state in America.

Look at the Greatest Generation. Very high proportion of men were in the military. They gave birth to the Baby Boomers and couldn't control their own kids, either as parents or as public officials and look at what has transpired both from the social changes brought on by the GG when they were in power and from what their kids have done to society. Under your model our best hope for responsible government and self-sacrifice in politics should have come from the GG cohort of politicians. I just don't see that at all.

There is a massive disconnect between the sacrifice and hardship endured while in the services and what comes later, when they get into politics. Even McCain, who endured a lot for his nation, doesn't strike me as being of a different kind, neither did Dole.

You know where the evidence of more stable governance philosophy is evident? In married people - they've sunk roots into community and have more invested than either young people or single people. I recall reading some psychological testing done on military officers involved in the nuclear program. Those who were married/had children were more reluctant to follow commands and launch a nuclear attack than single guys. Same dynamic in play, I imagine.

Nope - he just watched a rerun of starship troopers.

It would prevent the Barack Obamas from holding office. Military service should be a requirement there as well.

Disagree.

Not for any Federal office.

But maybe for a handful.

Such as the Secretary of Defense... or the Secretary of the Army or Navy or Air Force.

And, perhaps, the Presidency and Vice Presidency and Speaker of the House.

But I think we're 200+ years too late, to put that into the Constitution.

Still, such a tradition would be comforting, to members of the Armed Forces and veterans.

Given that the person(s) sending our boys and girls into harms' way actually understand what that means, at the gut-level.

As to enfranchisement, however, well, that's probably fairly far overboard.

Although that, too, has its attractions.
