There were 72 carjackings in New Orleans through the first three months of 2021, according to police, who reported 43 over the same period last year. The first-quarter carjacking count would put the city on pace to exceed last year's total of 232, which was well above the average of 122 from the prior four years.
"You probably have a very small group of people who are doing the carjackings, and it's probably just a couple of individuals in different areas... that are committing multiple carjackings," said Mike Cahn, a security expert and former NOPD officer.
Through March 31, New Orleans police reported 54 armed carjackings and 18 without a weapon. Preliminary NOPD reports WDSU analyzed, which could possibly be reclassified after further investigation, show just over half of the carjacking victims were women. Victims were the only occupants of their vehicle in all but a handful of those incidents.
