Gays/lesbians are difficult as a part of your base. They're very proactive and demanding, they will give you their vote but they want you to work for them in return.

I'm not sure what really happened with dadt, but it there was something shady like they didn't allow it to come to a vote using the fillibuster. I really don't know how Rs are getting away with blocking votes and turning every one of them into a circus.
