PAOK FC presented the new team jersey for the 2020-2021 season and it has a hidden message.
At the bottom of the black and white striped jersey, which will be worn by PAOK players, there is a very special message.
“Hellenism. Hagia Sophia. PAOK. Refugees. Asia Minor. Pontus. Constantinople,” are written on the inside of the new PAOK jersey.
PAOK are a Greek football club from Thessalonika. They were founded in 1923 by refugees fleeing the war in Turkey.
So this looks like one to watch. Given the historical issues and the current tensions between the two countries it promises to be a lively encounter. My money would be on Besiktas , they are a class above the Greeks.
Football aside, this nonsense is a great illustration of the corrosive effect of right wing nationalism/populism. Raking up age old conflicts and setting the world back. We dont need this at all.
