Okay. So a lot of us would like a Constitutional amendment requiring a balanced federal budget, just like a lot of states have.

Good. Fine.

But here's another idea.

Whenever a Congress and the President spend more than they took in in revenues, the Federal Reserve will print new money bearing the President's face on the front, and the likenesses of the Speaker of the House and the Senate Majority Leader on the back.

This way, you can look in your wallet and see which assholes are the most responsible for the debasing of the currency.

If you have twice as many Obamas as you have Clintons, you will have some perspective.

No...

Very few times in the past 120 years has the budget been balanced. I don't think it is a good idea as it cost money to remain a world power as we currently are and we're simply better off.

instead I'd like to clear up the argument that the federal government doesn't have such power, because it clearly does.

Or how about this amendment?

"After five years from the ratification of this article, the government of the United States shall not make any thing but gold a tender in payment of debts. The official monetary unit of the United States shall be grams of gold."

Of course this would not mandate a balanced budget. But it would prevent the debt from growing forever.
