Yes, they are. And sure, some of those millions are choosing rent over health. And I see that as an issue that needs to be addressed. What I don't see is how this current clusterfuck of a bill is genuinely going to solve the problem LONG TERM. But, there are also millions who can afford to live and pay for healthcare but choose not to. That is their choice and I support their right to choice to be stupid.
The problem I have with the left wing argument is that, yet again, you want to force everyone to live to your rules. I don't accept your right to tell me how to live. I have the right to make my own choices.
That would be a valid argument if we carry through on the "let him die" philosophy, which we don't. We take care of the uninsured at emergency rooms, and when they prove unable to pay, the cost is spread around to the insured in the form of higher costs.
Of course, the real problem is that because we have uninsured - and even insured people with crappy insurance - people putting off medicin in favor of rent, the problems become more extreme. That slight cold you didn't want to pay the $132 co-pay on now balloons into a $1000 visit to the emergency room for acute pneumonia.
Here's the thing. Any health care system is going to be socialistic by nature. Most years, I paid in (or my employers did) more than I took out. Except that one year I had a lot of issues, and mysteriously, was let go the following year, as was anyone else who had a medical issue.
You will either be paying someone else's way, or someone will be paying your way.
My problem with Obama/RomneyCare (Romney's now defending his program again... I guess he figures he can.) is that it doesn't address the real issue, that costs are spiralling out of control. It's just increasing the support base unwillingly. It does nothing to control costs.
