Ronald Reagan said the Medicare would lead to the communist takeover of America.

Republicans haven't changed a bit.

Not quite. Here is the speech: Ronald Reagan on Medicare, circa 1961.

You will find he was entirely correct in his prediction that socialized medicin would one day become a reality by increments.

It’s very easy to disguise a medical program as a humanitarian project, most people are a little reluctant to oppose anything that suggests medical care for people who possibly can’t afford it.

Now the advocates of this bill when you try to oppose it challenge you on an emotional basis. They say, "What would you do? Throw these poor people out to die with no medical attention?”

Talk about nothing changing a bit!!

If you don’t, this program I promise you, will pass just as surely as the sun will come up tomorrow and behind it will come other federal programs that will invade every area of freedom as we have known it in this country until one day as Norman Thomas said we will wake to find that we have socialism, and if you don’t do this and I don’t do this, one of these days we are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children, what it once was like in America when men were free.

Republicans haven't changed a bit.

Projection.

We could only wish we were getting socialised medicine. He was always going to be able to pay for his own healthcare.

Reagan warns that if his listeners do not stop the proposed medical program, "behind it will come other government programs that will invade every area of freedom as we have known it in this country until one day as Norman Thomas said we will wake to find that we have socialism." Under this scenario, Reagan says, "We are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children, what it once was like in America when men were free."

A communist takeover of America.

Like I said.

How did the USSR and Cuba handle medical benefits of their people?

How does Taiwan handle medical benefits?

When Taiwan–another country with a strong free-market economy–decided to create a new health care system in the mid-1990s, it studied every existing model. It too chose a model of universal access and universal insurance but decided against having several private insurers, as Switzerland and the U.S. do. Instead it created a single insurer, basically a version of Medicare. The result: universal access and high-quality care at stunningly low costs. Taiwan spends only 7% of its GDP on health care.

if Reagan thought Communism would be bad for the country, he should have stayed around for the outcome of the 2010 elections for the House of Representatives ....

I apologize, I wasn't aware of your mathematical deficiencies.

;) Stupid fuck.

The question is can it be scaled up from 23 to 300 million?

Will it be favorable for job growth?
Will it be favorable for medical innovation???

Medicare D.

The exact same program passed by Dems would have sent Conservatives into apoplectic rage, but for some reason, the GOP loved them some Medicare D. And don't tell me that you were one of those who opposed it, because you weren't , and if every conservative who claims that they did oppose it actually did oppose it , it would not have become law.

That would be great but that's not what we got. Obama, to our dismay, didn't even start with that on the table.

So let's adopt the Taiwan system? Why not?

Bingo.

In Taiwan everyone's health insurance is paid by the government. Each healthcare provider has a machine that records every person's healthcare transactions and records them on a central data base. The 5% of the people who account for 50% of the healthcare costs are then targeted to receive counseling and special attention help them get healthier. This approach has worked well to bring down healthcare costs for everyone. Cory Booker used this type of system in Newark, and it worked there as well.

You have roughly 13 times more people to cover. Massachusetts is smaller than Taiwan, and it had a universal healthcare system that was specifically designed to work for that amount of people. It worked. Now, try that on 330 million people. Not so much.

That's a common point from the Right, but it makes no difference whatsoever.

So communism. Exactly the life draining system of making the individual the least important part of living their lives much like Reagan predicted. So let's go with universal healthcare. Next should be universal jobs, universal food stamps and universal housing right?

Sink the ship down to it's lowest common denominator. Communism.

Things have been improving in Taiwan. Not so much in America.

Like I said. Republicans never change.

Every industrialized country in the world has national health insurance. You have to choose either an individual mandate like the Swiss or a single payer system like Taiwan. Otherwise you have uninsured free riders who use the emergency room for their healthcare which is the most expensive healthcare there is.

Personally I like the single payer system like Taiwan uses, but an insurance mandate works as well.

Taking care of sick people is the right thing to do.
