Hello, welcome to America. So, let me tell you how elections work....

Primaries are held for each party. It is during these primaries that candidates highlight the differences between themselves and the other candidates of the same party. They rarely agree on anything, because they want to distinguish themselves to the voters of that party.

Then, as it becomes clear who will win the nomination, some candidates drop out. They often become supporters of one of the remaining candidates.

Once there is a nominee for both parties, usually division is put aside, as in the general election, the differences between parties must be highlighted.
