Everyone heard this story? Come on, you would be escorted out of the room in a debate with an answer like that. Time, date, who, what, when, where. Or else stand branded a liar that pulls story out of his ass.

Tell us how effect is only a noun, now if you tell that to anybody with an education you would wear more humiliation than you currently wear on your face.

We ain't in a debate, this is a message board, that is why you are allowed to run from all your failed posts like when you made the ridiculous claim green energy an make steel, you posted a link that proved the opposite. Or how about the time you claimed geothermal was mining nickel, someone else posted a link to show that project failed, your article was a press release before the plant became operational.

Pretty stupid posts you ran from, so do not preach from your high horse, you fell off that as soon as you ran from your own comments.

Consider that PV panels are only viable for about 6 hours a day. Of those 6 hours only 2 are at full output (60% of rated capacity). The other four hours are zero to 60% graduated. A 100 watt panel will create 60 watts for two hours at 12 volts. Roughly 5 amps of current and 2.0 amps for the other four hours on average. This one panel will charge a 100/amp/hour battery which will last about 6-8 hours with one 15 watt bulb.

Not only can the PV array not sustain power 24 hours a day it can not charge a battery bank and provide the amount of power necessary for day to day living. Just sizing these things for a 2.5kw monthly use would require 35 100 watt panels, 25 100 amp/hr batteries and a 5,000 watt inverter. For peak loads to run your AC, electric stove, and dryer a 15kw generator set.

Their math is screwed up in the article as their predictions for performance are about 60% to high..

Come on, the subject is 100 people in Denmark that froze to death, supposedly because solar energy failed. You are running from the subject. Not only that, but many steel mills use electric furnaces for melting steel, and our electricity comes directly from Bonneville Dam, hydroelectric, and very much green power.

Good God! Not even going to go all through the simple math that you simply failed on. Are you a pre-adolescent? You write like one, and that is certainly the extent of your knowledge.

I'll answer your question when I know HOW MANY GWhrs were produced on the 28th and whether that burst of wind energy lasted for more than an hour. Also want to know WHERE IT WENT. Because if it was sudden --- it could not be sold, used or exported.. It's simply an anomaly for wind operation..

Besides -- I'm not really motivated to discuss useless factoids for useless wind power since this thread is about 6 hour a day Solar... Isn't it????

Why yes, this thead is about solar.

New Report U.S. Solar Market Grows 41 Has Record Year in 2013 SEIA

WASHINGTON D.C. AND BOSTON, MA – Continuing its explosive growth, the U.S. solar industry had a record-shattering year in 2013. According to GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association’s (SEIA) Solar Market Insight Year in Review 2013, photovoltaic (PV) installations continued to proliferate, increasing 41% over 2012 to reach 4,751 megawatts (MW). In addition, 410 MW of concentrating solar power (CSP) came online. Solar was the second-largest source of new electricity generating capacity in the U.S., exceeded only by natural gas. Additionally, the cost to install solar fell throughout the year, ending the year 15% below the mark set at the end of 2012.

At the end of 2013 there were more than 440,000 operating solar electric systems in the U.S. totaling over 12,000 MW of PV and 918 MW of CSP.

Following the link we get this lie;

410 MW of concentrating solar power (CSP) generating capacity.

Yes Generating Capacity but with a low Capacity Factor of about 20% real output is around 80 MW.

80 MW is a tiny amount of energy that I get to take another percentage from, this time 20% for;
Total Losses in Power Distribution Transmission Lines-Part 1 Electrical Notes Articles
Total Losses in Power Distribution & Transmission Lines-Part
(1) Technical Losses:
  • The technical losses are due to energy dissipated in the conductors, equipment used for transmission Line, Transformer, sub- transmission Line and distribution Line and magnetic losses in transformers.
  • Technical losses are normally 22.5%, and directly depend on the network characteristics and the mode of operation.
  • The major amount of losses in a power system is in primary and secondary distribution lines. While transmission and sub-transmission lines account for only about 30% of the total losses. Therefore the primary and secondary distribution systems must be properly planned to ensure within limits.
  • The unexpected load increase was reflected in the increase of technical losses above the normal level
  • Losses are inherent to the distribution of electricity and cannot be eliminated.

So we get 74 MW of Solar?

California just shut down 2 Nuclear Reactors (actually 3). SONGS unit 2&3, a loss of 2.3 GW of electricity.

3 billion dollars for 74 mw, plus it will cost another 3 billion to scrap SONGS.

Makes me think we better scare everyone into spending more money in California, Drought! Drought! Drought!

Yea Solar?

I think somebody must have pranked you with a fake news story.
100 weather hardened and savvy Danes dying of exposure in 1 day because of a power outage? Unbelievable!

The North American Ice Storm of 1998 (also known as Great Ice Storm of 1998) was a massive combination of five smaller successive ice storms which combined to strike a relatively narrow swath of land from eastern Ontario to southern Quebec to Nova Scotia in Canada, and bordering areas from northern New York to central Maine in the United States, in January 1998. It caused massive damage to trees and electrical infrastructure all over the area, leading to widespread long-term power outages. Millions were left in the dark for periods varying from days to weeks, and in some instances, months. It led to 35 fatalities.....

And Hurricane Sandy, 21 deaths attributable to power outage

More than 8.2 million households were without power in 17 states as far west as Michigan
Without any light, 12 people succumbed to injuries from nasty falls. Nine deaths occurred due to carbon monoxide poisoning, after people left their generators running indoors.

100 Danes freezing to death in one day would seem like a statistical miracle. And I think would be a news worthy item. However, scouring the European news media from Oct. 29-30-31 all I could find was;

From Wikipedia:
The St. Jude storm, also known as Cyclone Christian,[2] and other names, was a severe European windstorm that hit Northwestern Europe on 27 and 28 October 2013 causing at least 17 deaths. The highest windspeed was in Denmark, where a gust of 120.8 mph (194.4 km/h) was recorded in the south of the country on the afternoon of 28 October, the strongest wind recorded in the country's history

In Denmark, The Lyngby railway station was damaged. Trees were blown down in almost every part of the country and car accidents were also caused by the storm. A roof in Haderslev in southern region of Denmark landed on an elderly woman. A man died after being hit by a brick from a fallen house. The day after, 29 October a man was killed after he crashed into a fallen tree on the road.

I guess we know the reason for the record wind power generation. Now all we have to figure out is why they had zero wind when most of Europe was still experiencing gusts from the hurricane?

3 deaths, you think they would have mentioned the 100 deaths? And like I say none of the European papers had that as a news item. Perhaps you got it from a more in depth source. If so could you give me the link, I hate to rely on unreliable, incomplete reporting.

Of course 100 people freezing to death is even more miraculous because northern Denmark had remarkably warm spring-like weather in Oct. 2013. The temperature in AAlborg, Northern Denmark, did not fall below freezing the whole month. Right about now I'm starting to get suspicious, I think you're pranking us, some kind of a joke, right? I better read thru the thread and see when you fess up.

Any reputable source says solar/wind will still be a fringe energy market after 2040, including the Obama EIA so at this moment I'm laughing my balls off. Here's the EIA projection graph >>>

As I recall, conservatives always claimed that solar power would never amount to any more than a small fraction of energy usage. Looks like they were wrong about that too.

In fact, this story seems all the more compelling today because last week I was invited to attend a presentation that explained how anyone and everyone can be involved in buying solar energy without the need for solar panels on your home. It was pretty interesting, actually. It's called Sun Share. I'm including a link to it only so people can see how it works.

SunShare Community Solar Gardens - MySunShare.com

Energy agency predicts sun could overtake oil, gas as main source of energy on the planet.

By mid-century, the sun could be the largest source of energy and help reign in global warming by preventing the release of billions of tons of carbon dioxide emissions, according to a new report from the International Energy Agency.

The bullish report is the latest dose of good news for the solar industry that has seen phenomenal growth. Global demand is expected to double every two years through 2022 as prices fall and the technology continues to improve. The United States is one of the markets poised for strong growth.

Solar power could be world s main energy source by 2050 - Fortune

First of all, the prediction of what will be a reality 36 years from now is not mine.

However, let's take a look at recent history. The first men landed on the moon in 1969. 36 years before that event, it was 1933. In June of that year, a research group at RCA headed by Vladimir K. Zworykin publicly launched the 'iconoscope' which ws the first practical cathode ray tube television camera. From that humble beginning, look how many homes across the US and Europe had TVs by 1969, which, by they way, they used to watch Neil Armstrong's historic walk on the moon.
