The palm wreath is meant to symbolize honor, while the crossed swords evoke the twin goals of the ongoing operations: the defeat of ISIS and the restoration of stability in the region.

Coverage and portrayl of them as such is. Fundamentally no difference between terrorist groups of the 70s and those of now. Names change, but depicting one as something new and unprecedented to justify military intervention is hardly a new trick.
