The âdisproportionate representationâ of William Shakespeare in the theatre has propagated âwhite, able-bodied, heterosexual, cisgender male narrativesâ, according to researchers in an ÂŁ800,000 taxpayer-funded project.
The claim has prompted critics to accuse the Arts and Humanities Research Council, which has funded the study by academics at the University of Roehampton, of promoting âcultural clickbaitâ.
The project, devoted to âcentering marginalized communities in the contemporary performance of early modern playsâ, is due to be completed in two yearsâ time.
The researchers want to challenge the ânormative trendâ in âclassical theatreâ arising from âthe disproportionate representation of William Shakespeare in scholarship and performanceâ.
In response they are mounting a production of a comedy by Shakespeareâs contemporary John Lyly, Galatea, which features characters disguised as the opposite sex. The researchers say the play offers âan unparalleled affirmative and intersectional demographic, exploring feminist, queer, transgender and migrant livesâ.
They say the play âhas almost no stage history since 1588â, adding that âDiverse Alarumsâ, the name of the project, âwill transform this state of affairs with a unique combination of methods, ranging across early modern studies, practice-as-research, audience studies, qualitative research, trans, queer and disability studiesâ.
Comment:
Leave Shakespeare alone.
The Radical Left can write their own plays.
They are attempting to erase mainstream culture.
