As rumours circulated recently online about a potential merger between al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and the al-Qaeda-inspired “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant” (ISIL), an al-Qaeda leader in Syria released a video refuting the possibility of any merger.

Abu Suleiman al-Muhajir, a senior member within al-Nusra Front (ANF), al-Qaeda’s branch in Syria, released a video in April saying al-Qaeda leaders must report to al-Qaeda leadership to receive permission to merge with other branches.

Somalia’s al-Shabaab never announced a merger with AQAP in Yemen because it did not have the authority to do so, he said, and any attempt by ISIL to do the same with any al-Qaeda branch would be even more difficult.
