The greatest songwriters and composers.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Some really good songs within their genre though what I call @Second Shelf@ great.

lol. Just read the last few posts. Finally the soy boys are on topic!!!

However one made a point (or at least it was pointed out to the) that a group LIVE can be incredible. Had a similar experience with Phantom of the opera. I dislike listening to it on records or whatever but the wife dragged me to it in London and it was indeed amazing. However Chicago was the opposite; awful live stage show (also in London) but the movie was FANTASTIC!!! Never listened to it elsewhere but in short snippets..meh.

Greg

Capriccio Italien (Tchaikovsky) Pyotr's amazing but not only "Great" composition.

Greg

For movie music (not including lyrics) one name immediately comes to mind:

Bill Conti.

Are there plenty of others? You bet.

But when I consider “Rocky” and “The Right Stuff” I have to say, he is a genius.

The Beatles usually come to mind first when it comes to popular music. Steely Dan has a lot of great songs. Carole King. Bob Dylan. Elton John of course. It's been awhile since he could hit those high notes with his voice, but so many great songs....

Burt Bacharach and Neil Diamond wrote a ton of hits.

Over in the Jazz scene, bandleaders, especially those who lead Jazz Orchestras (Big Band) rely heavily bandmembers who are also composers.
One such example is William "Count" Basie. Some of his primary composers were:
Sammy Nestico
Frank Foster
Freddie Green
Neal Hefti.

I just scanned every page of this thread and can't believe nobody mentioned Gordon Lightfoot. I'm also a big fan of Bob Seger. And who can forget Bobbie Gentry and the Ode To Billy Joe?

what are you upset about greg?....come on and tell uncle harry and cousin bobo what troubles you........
Greg's a big Burt Bacharach fan. Perfect example of what I was talking about. He's so gay. His music sucks right? But then he died and Howard Stern had some famous singers come in to sign songs of people who recently died. Charlie Puth did Burt Bacharach Close to You. Holy shit!

It was his pump up song before he did Karate? LOL.

That was rude of us. So to get back on track, speaking of John Lennon, I googled "who wrote the most songs" and this popped up

John Lennon with 22,484 versions of 270 songs. He is not only #1 on the Rock list but he is the most recorded Songwriter of all time, period.Sep 3, 2023
