They (usually) fire the same ammunition.
They use the same size magazines.
They are available in the same barrel, stock and receiver combinations
They are able to use/mount the same sights and accessories
They are equally suited for any and all of the traditionally legal purposes for a firearm.

Aren't they, for all practical intents and purposes, the same firearm?

Is a Boeing 747 the same thing as a military C-22? ... in some ways yes, in some ways no ... our military numbers these things in their way, not the manufacturers' ... I'm pretty sure they don't install mind-control ray guns on civilian jet airliners ... but I could be wrong ... AR-15 is semi-automatic, one bullet per trigger pull ... M-16 is either fully auto, just keep firing, or "burst" fire, three bullets per trigger pull ...

The State need only store the military receiver ... their citizen-solders will show up with the AR-15 ... quick change to M-16s ... then mow down commie Chinese if they think they can land on our shores ... stupid idiots ...
