Denmark doesn't have an empire to maintain.
Neither does America. Not in the conventional sense, anyway. The difference being is that America's predecessors' empires were colonised not only to extract natural resources, but to create living space and opportunities for the mother country's people. America's 'empire' is focused on one thing and one thing only: the stewardship of the world's oil supply.
I wouldn't mind paying more in taxes if that's the benefits I got in return. Not only would I get to use the benefits but my kids and grandkids and everyone else.
So they get taken care if from cradle to grave. That must be why their industry is so great, or their space program has accomplished so much, or their healthcare system has developed so many of the worlds breakthroughs, or why they were able to lead the world in technology, or why people are sneaking accross their borders by the thousands just to taste the life they lead......oh wait! Never mind.

To do this in a country the size of America, including the massive and necessary military.
The tax rate would have to be at least 70%. That would be my guess.
So if you made $20 per hour, or $41,600 - you would bring home $10,400 a year, or about $200 a week. Good luck with that.

What you are not accounting for is the fact that less than half of WORKING Americans pay any federal income tax.
That would be 0% tax Orion.
So in order for us to pay all of their health costs and education cost, and likely housing cost...we would damn near have to pay 100% tax.
Take a look at France right now.

Which means place like Denmark would have to start footing the bills for a military to ensure stability of trade at sea, oil production, etc. So now Denmark gets to decide to either raise their already high taxes, cut social services, or keep writing bad checks.
Which will it be?
