To understand the situation in its full complexity, we have to understand the Professional Political Class, which includes International Corporate Elites who have a 'Corporate Crony Network' with politicians who they view as 'Team Players'. The Team Players are politicians who view getting re-elected as their primary goal because political campaigning is all they really know how to do; it is their career and calling in life.
As to nations and national interests, the International/Multinational corporate elites originally viewed borders as an economic nuisance but have today come to them as antiquated artificial dividers among a global humanity. They then drag their Team Players with them, of course, and those who refuse to 'go that far' soon discover just how disposable they really are. They also sponsor via the corporate owned media all this Globalism propaganda, 'We Are the World' type nonsense. How anyone can think we are literally the world without being the most arrogant naive on the planet is a mystery. This world view demands open borders and the eventual evaporation of nations, borders and national cultures.
Elections are basically then fraudulent choices between one person in one party network or another, but all the big vote gatherers are all part of the Corporate Crony Network, just different competing teams within it, much like one may root for one football team or another but either way you are still paying money to the same sports league owners. No matter which team wins or loses, the owners always win. So with a few exceptions this election (Sanders, Trump, Carson, and Cruz), no matter who you vote for, if they are part of the Corporate Crony Network they will support continued degradation of national cultures, national rights, national borders and national interests. No matter who you vote for, with the exception of a few parties, the International Corporate Elites still win.
The Corporate Owned Media is part of this Professional Political Class as well, as they and their editors now work for one multinational corporation or another. They 'buy in' to a competing political team known as a party and like a sports fan might do, everything associated with their team is golden while all the others are rubbish. Objectivity, honesty and serving the interest of the public good are eventually replaced with loyalty to the party, subjective advocacy journalism, and serving the needs of the corporate management who will give them their much desired promotions and raises. So they spread the Corporate story line on every topic and the roots of the democratic process are starved of real information for the voters to use when they decide to cast their vote.
So the big picture is figuring out how to break up this Corporate Crony Network by legal restrictions, stronger borders, punitive tariffs and strict enforcement of immigration laws.
