Australian astronomers have described a supermassive black hole at the centre of a distant galaxy 1.8 million light years away (illustrated). IRAS 20100−4156 is made up of three spiral galaxies smashing into one another, and measurement of the gas at its centre has revealed a supermassive black hole of 3.8 billion solar masses
