To anyone who uses the "if you're against socialism you can't support the stimulus" response to those of us who believe in capitalism...

...please stop with it. It's simply not accurate. I wouldn't be so rigid as to suggest that anyone who isn't a libertarian is somehow a socialist. There are degrees of government necessity, and we know the alt-left socialists from the classical liberals and Neo-cons. Many of us "capitalists" just believe the proper amount to function as a society is whichever amount is needed, not one person more if possible.

It's dishonest to say "you must love socialism now because you agree with a government payout to families in need". No, I don't, because this was ordered by government for the health of society. It's in fact why people like me despise government waste, abuse and crony capitalism because when the emergencies like this inevitably hit, we want to be sure we have liquidity to weather the storm. Canada is giving $100B as a first step. We will expect probably at least another equal amount in a 2nd, or even 3rd injection. This, in an already struggling economy. We simply had no choice, people can't afford to live.

Crony capitalism is socialism to me. Often the worst kind. So is excessive covert police in an economy and in the lives of citizens as we have in Canada. You can be sure it hurts societies and every oppressive nation in history employed it, from the Germans, to Russia, China and all their satellites.

I care a great deal about the human condition and about my fellow man. I believe staunchly in the Rule of Law, Due Process, principles and values of fairness. I believe in capitalism. I believe those who succeed as capitalists owe it to themselves and those who made it possible for their successes to give back.

One of my goals in life was to one day have a great amount so I could help others because I know abject poverty. I know what kids who are living in it are going through and it hurts me. My opportunities have been stolen by the lying, low performing creeps in my country, but it won't stop me fighting so that their ilk are exposed and hopefully erased from our history. I've become more and more bold about talking about it, after an initial long period of being almost ashamed to do so. I can't anymore, we all reach that point of "acceptance" of ones reality at some point. Some of us just refuse to break. I warn Americans what awaits you if you let your nation become like ours.

Let's be clear. You will have MANY more abusers as the ones I described above, if you embrace socialism. Dealing with emergencies is not socialism. In fact, it was a socialist nation that created this global pandemic.

Thank you for your time. God Bless, and Happy Capitalism!

The just passed two trillion dollar stimulus has nothing to do with Socialism. It does, however, fall under something known as Limited Economic Interventionism which is a purely capitalistic practice, and an American one as well. The lack of education demonstrated these days is sometimes nauseating. Then again, no surprise the best some modern folks can do is repeat what they hear before vetting their "facts".

The concept of socialism, or rather, communism, is deliberately distorted in our society, therefore, let us, as during the investigation of President Clinton’s pranks in the Oval Hall, to the question “did he have sex with Monica Lewinsky”, he answered with the question: “let's clarify, WHAT do you mean by sex! ".

So I suggest REFINING WHAT Forum participants understand by "socialism." A one-time handout by the political elite is not socialism. This is a "handout", nothing more or an inhibitor of the protest movement in the country against corporate capitalism, which has robbed the middle class of America and no more...

Don't be under the thumb of political scientists and journalists who DELIBERATELY distort the meaning of socialism.

Now you get it? Finally. Better late than never.

you see you don’t want people who don’t believe in government running the government.

Government ordered the shutdown of businesses. Government is providing a temporary stimulus to counteract the shutdown THEY ordered. That is not Socialism.

Exactly. This isn't a situation like the bank bailouts where any individual or business fucked up, and asked for assistance. The government forced them to close, and the government is compensating them for it.

The libs are backed into a corner of disinformation....its all they have....lies....
If this pandemic has taught us one thing is how pathetically broke the American middle class is. Can’t even go a month without a paycheck.

how is this possible if America was great again? So many of you all are one month from trouble? Sad.
meanwhile the rich are ok. They’ll survive this.

8 years of a mushy economic recovery under Obama nearly destroyed the middle class....they were just making a come back when China launched this germ warfare onto the world....but they are not dead...the middle class and main street will come roaring back....

The main reason for all of this is...China, to a lesser degree Mexico and even Canada (when we talk about U.S jobs being impacted).

At the very least, deal with outsourcing to dishonest, secretive governments. WHO is nothing compared to the WTO. The WTO have allowed China to steal and destroy the Wests Middle Class.

I wonder how much longer the democrats will continue destroying the country?

Overall, a very good post. I was right with you until the next to last paragraph. For a capitalist favoring citizen of this country, putting up with some degrees of creeping socialism, can be an irritant. But, nobody stole my opportunities. I am the captain of my ship and always have been and will be. I have navigated the waters of mixed economic realities as best I could, and am satisfied. Not rich, but comfortable, through my own efforts, good judgement, and perseverance and always conservative management.

Every country that does trade with the rest of the world keeps its vital industries at home. Manufacturing is what made the middle class. It’s gone. We need to stop having so many kids the planet and economy doesn’t need them like we did in 1900

Delirium of a person in a severe stage of a coronavirus. NOT A WORD that the living standards of middle-class Americans after 1971 have FALLEN BEHIND a dozen countries. Americans work longer hours often for LOWER PAY and benefits. In 2010, for example, young men were averaging $ 45,000 and the executive elite like Carol Bartz, Yahoo CEO, or Leslie Moonves., CBS CEO were making 150,000 A DAY !!! What about the defeated Germany which enjoys more widely SHARED prosperity than the USA.

Indeed, it's not. People on both sides, for decades, have been conflating socialism with "government help" - and that's wrong.

Socialism has a very specific meaning, which is all about state control of capital and the means of production. Socialism is not public parks. It's not progressive income tax. It's not public education. It's not the Fed. It's not welfare. These things are often seen as inroads to socialism, and if they are not carefully limited can lead to socialism, but they are not state control of the economy. Neither is emergency support to fight off a pandemic.

Really? Because my boss just called and told me they’re bringing me back as an essential worker. Three days in they’ve lost thousands of dollars because I’m not there. So I’ll keep getting 75% of my pay but 20 hours will be at 100%. I’ll work from home 2 hours in morning two hours in afternoon.

plus I’m sitting on $40k liquid cash. Not like the rest of you idiot trump supporters.

And my union buddies are getting 75% of their pay too. You? Unemployment

It's far worse than that. It's also interference in your life by unaccountable agencies. Their motives are self serving and blindly supported by politicians who aren't interested in holding them accountable either.

It's been rampant for years in Canada, illegal surveillance, massive budget increases, a Charter of Rights that is laughed at by those sworn to uphold it, tracking of your cellphone to see who you hang out with. Even in some cases, blatant orders of phone tapping of the oversight board by the Chief of police, who not only kept his job, he moved to the provincial level chief AND became a federal minister years later!

In short, the social harm done to expansive, unaccountable government is WORSE than the state interference and ownership of state means of production, as bad as that is. I've seen America become more and more socialist since Obama, maybe since Bush. I'm seeing more and more politicians talk about nationizing and controlling.

All of this will harm your Constitution and individual achievement, I guarantee it.
