This is an obvious lie, because the US has always fought against the Taliban and al-Qaeda. Fools like the Russians believe this because they confuse the Mujahideen with Pashtun terrorists, this is due to stupidity and illiteracy

All the aid that Charlie Wilson arranged to go to Afghanistan to fight the Russians had to go through Pakistan first. Pakistan took their "cut of the action" from that pipeline. Then channeled most of the rest to their favored factions of Afghani insurgents. This did not include factions favorable to the West/USA such as the Northern Alliance, etc.

When Russia left Afghanistan the USA lost interest in that nation/region, "the cause" there. Part of what set the stage for later Al Qaeda and other Jihadist organizations.
Militant Jihadis within the Pakistan ISI saw a void to fill, in the Pushtan and on through into Afghanistan, hence they "created" the Taliban. Same old fighters/mujahedin, new name.

To destroy the Taliban you have to destroy the religion/dogma they believe and also their support base within the Pakistani ISI.
Neither the USA nor any others in the West want to start a Pakistan civil war and get embroiled in that mess.
