Too many laws - kids get hurt

Too many laws about what you can and cannot do to or for your kids when they are in the clutches of public education.

The over-control has made a complete turnaround to utter negligence even for their simple safety.

US mom angry after kids sunburned during field trip

A mom in Washington state is steaming mad after her two daughters were so badly sunburned during a school field trip, they had to be taken to hospital.

....

Michener was particularly outraged because her daughter Zoe has very fair skin from a form of albinism. She said the school's staff are aware of her daughter's condition, but couldn't make an exception.

The school board says it has to ban sunscreen because it's state law.

....

She also couldn't try to protect her girls with sun hats because hats are not allowed at school, even on field days.

"Too many laws" LOL! Because its not an issue of whether a given law is a good idea or not- but a question of how many laws there are overall.
Too many - and its bad! Its bad! We gotta reduce the number of laws!
Yeah, we do. And, this is just one of many reasons why.

The way to hell is paved with good intentions.....

But, why are these stupid laws in place?
I'm thinking they're not there as Nanny-anything, more to protect the schools and state from litigious parents.
Australia and my country don't have the litigious culture of the USA and, like Australia, our kids aren't allowed outside without a hat, sunscreen and sleeved shirt.
In fact, the teachers carry bottles if sunscreen about.

If a kid, or their parent, had a problem with sunscreen then it's up to them to inform the school.

The rules came about from being sued by other parents. You put sunscreen on my child and he got a rash... You made him wear a hat and now he cry's at night....

The whole no hat thing is unfortunately gang related....

The hat thing probably is because the school doesn't want students wearing hats in the classroom. Sunscreen might have been dragged down on a general no OTC drugs rule (and, there's really no need for sun screen at school, except on field trips, if even that).

In this story, it's just a case of a shithead mother who didn't dress her child for the field trip, now she's blaming the school and the law for her mistake.

Considering we are now living in the nanny state.... why on earth aren't we nanny stating something like sunburn and skin cancer?

In Australia, school children are not allowed outside at all unless they have sunscreen on and wearing a sun hat. Its called slip, slap, slop. [/COLOR]

The nanny state ostensibly always has good intentions, but harm almost always follows legislating safety.

Here a girl gets sunburned because the stupid mother didn't prepare her daughter for a field trip, thinking that the rules prevented her from doing so.

There in Australia, kids probably are left out of activities if they didn't bring a hat. Other kids are probably sickened by too many chemicals on the skin. In northern climates, sun screen can contribute to vitamin-D deficiency. I also have a theory that sun screen can contribute to heart disease.

Sunburn means more coloured people about...and that's not good is it Ariux?

Oh yes...let's blame the parents. Better then blaming the real guilty party.

The mom was the one who put this girl into a sleeveless and backless top, without sunscreen, while knowing about the field trip.

Did you not read the part where the school was following a state law?

Their hands were tied by real estate, insurance, and car salesmen we elect to govern our states.
Blame goes to the state legislature.

Other than that, thank you Cap'n Obvious.

You're absolutely right. I agree 100%. It had nothing to do with a bad law. Had nothing to do with a parent who decided it was better to whine after the fact than be pro-active. Had to do with TOO MANY LAWS. There were SO MANY LAWS, they BURNED this little girl, that's how many laws. The laws were just so numerous and so intense they burned right through her skin.

Laws are bad. They burn little girls. We need to get rid of them.

Tacoma Public School district spokesman Dan Voelpel told Yahoo! Shine that, according to statewide law, teachers are not allowed to apply sunscreen to students and students can only apply it to themselves if they have a doctor's note.

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

Straw?

Does THIS look FAMILIAR:
Too many laws - kids get hurt

I love how directly addressing the substance of the OP subject heading - that too many laws causes kids to get hurt - is selling straw.

Clearly - these girls received burns due to there being too many laws. The sheer magnitude of the numbers of laws were too much for their complextions to handle. And parents who have children with medical problems should never make the school aware of those problems until after something bad happens, that's called "personal responsibility". To burden the parent with informing the folks who will be looking after their kids for 7 hours a day 9 months a year of their child's medical condition is too much to expect a reasonable person to be able to handle.

That was lame the first time you said it. Just in case you really don't get it, "too many laws" implies that we have a bad law because the government continued to make laws after we already had all the laws we need.

But, the rest of your post is right. Mom only needed to properly dress her daughter and apply sunscreen before school. Even if in mom's delusions, she didn't think that would be enough, she could have done more, like send her daughter to school with a tube of sunscreen and a note, or even keeping her daughter at home that day.

There are kids who are allergic to sun screen. If this shithead mom is whining about the school over a sunburn that resulted from her own negligence, imagine the screams of a similar shithead mom if her daughter was given sunscreen at school and had an allergic reaction. We'd be reading an article ripping on the school, complete with pictures if a child who "had to be" hospitalized for severe rash covering her face, limbs, legs, and back.

Sooo..

if the girl is abino, and didn't have sunscreen...and the school knew this..

Why the hell didn't they send her home?

Or make her sit in the shade??????

But really, call her mom and make her come and get her.

I swear once a week our school calls me to pick up one or the other of the kids for things like itching, sniffling, saying his or her throat tickles, a red spot on an elbow, bronchitis (hello, they have that all the time. Do we need a plastic bubble??? It's not contagious for cripes' sakes).

So why the hell didn't the school send her home?

Look at her picture. She's not an albino. She's just fair-skinned.

The MOM sent that girl to school half naked. That was mom's doing, not the schools. If the only difference was that the girl was properly dressed, only half as much skin would have been sunburned, reducing this sunburn to a mere annoyance.

If the mom had put on sunblock before the daughter left for school, some of it would have stayed on most of the day. If mom had sent sunblock with her daughter, in spite of the rules...

Sunburn is usually only a minor annoyance, so a teacher might not have thought the situation was severe, especially if the girl didn't complain about anything. Yes, if only there was a more intelligent and saintly teacher... Or, if only this girl had a mom who wasn't a shithead.

Credit where credit is due. Now if you could only think clearly about racial issues.

"Too many laws - kids get hurt" carries an obvious implication, and Rav'n it up with 'nuance' doesn't change anything.
