Trump: "A Tariff is a tax that doesn’t affect our country"

No, he has not fixed it, but the situation has improved. It's not going to be fixed until the government gets over its spending addiction, which neither party is doing and neither presidential candidate is talking about.
They never do. Only republicans talk about it, when a democrat is president.

When they decide the debt is a problem and we need another Great Recession to fix it they’ll let us know. I suspect in 9 years when social security goes bankrupt. Austerity cuts like Greece saw during bush’s global recession. 20% cuts to Medicare and social security. More out of pocket

Paying down the national debt with Tariffs from nation's who have them on our goods is the right way to go....
Tariffs and trade war are the same thing. We need protectionist trade policies, not tariffs. All tariffs do is make imports more expensive. The trade imbalance is a national security issue and should be addressed as such. Using favorable trade policies in an attempt to shoehorn democracy and human rights into other nations has been a failure. It's time to get real and end this trade disparity.

Well it does make sense. The consumers pays more for the product.

The government makes money on the deal

It then becomes a question of how the government spends that money.

  • The Trump administration imposed nearly $80 billion worth of new taxes on Americans by levying tariffs on thousands of products valued at approximately $380 billion in 2018 and 2019, amounting to one of the largest tax increases in decades.
  • The Biden administration has kept most of the Trump administration tariffs in place, and in May 2024, announced tariff hikes on an additional $18 billion of Chinese goods, including semiconductors and electric vehicles, for an additional tax increase of $3.6 billion.
  • We estimate the Trump-Biden tariffs will reduce long-run GDP by 0.2 percent, the capital stock by 0.1 percent, and employment by 142,000 full-time equivalent jobs.
Trade war may start.

Still it is a bogus claim by Trump that it will have no effect and that is the issue. IF he had explain why he believes this then he could make an argument why he believes so.

Instead of because he say so which does weaken his statements.

Tariff is a protectionist trade policy

This is patently false. Either Trump doesn't understand basic economics or he's lying. No matter what he says, tariffs aren't paid by the other country. They're paid by you. In 2019, the Trump administration doled out billions in "free" money to farmers who could no longer sell their goods to China due to their retaliatory strike in buying American agriculture due to Trump's tariffs. I believe this is what MAGA calls "Socialism."

Thank you. I have pointed this countless times. In addition to inflating the prices China issued a tariff on un response, we paid billions to US farmers because China said keep it.

They source grain elsewhere since. We will never get this market back.

He killed us. He also pulled out of TPP leaving the South Asian market to China.

China won on every front under Trump and the unwashed don't understand any of this. Morons.

The "Harbor Freight" crowd would demand a tariff exemption on the H/F products or it would be a march on DC with the intent to burn DC to the ground. "Today my clothing tomorrow my tools!"

How does allowing imports to continue while increasing the cost to consumers protect American business?
If you increase the cost of imports people will start buying American.

China wants to import $10,000 e cars. When they bankrupt American e car companies, then they’ll raise prices to $50,000. Should america allow this e car in?

We don't need a sledgehammer to solve the trade problem, a scalpel will do. You don't place a general tariff on everything, you forbid the import of certain goods. This will 'incentivize' American companies to produce those products. We do this until there is a reasonable balance of trade. Such trade restrictions force each country to internalize production.

Wrong. Even with tariffs the cost of imports will generally be cheaper than domestically produced stuff.

"If we trade with ourselves, we have the money and the goods."

Some would call protecting your food source security...

True

Tariffs are paid by the importing consumers not the exporting producers

And they serve a very useful purpose

In the case of US farm products as I remember china didnt impose a tariff but rather an outright ban

Naturally trump didn't want to be blamed for farm bankruptcies

I forgive him for that

But moving forward farmers must learn the fallacy of relying on trade with china

As America diversifies trade farmers must diversify also

A tariff is a tax imposed on foreign-made goods or materials, paid by the importing business to the US government, the cost of which is largely passed on to American consumers. It is essentially a specific consumption tax by another name, the importing business pays the gov't and the consumers who buy the products pay back the importer. It used to be the major form in revenue for the gov't, but with the introduction of the income tax is now relatively insignificant.

It is a form of protectionism to prop up domestic industries by inducing citizens to buy their higher-priced goods. The problem is that they often lead to reduced trade, higher prices for consumers, and retaliation from abroad. It is a terrible idea that is used for political purposes to get votes and support, and there is ALWAYS a pushback.

Sounds like a policy to bring on more inflation.

TRUMP tariffs did the opposite.

And yet through the Trump years the trade deficit steadily grew (but really took off in the Biden years). Instead of selling us steel and aluminum they sold us products made of steel and aluminum.

Countries use them all the time.b It is done to protect jobs, especially when they subsidize trade to put us out of business.

Raise prices. Maybe and yup.

Does the Op support the U.S. or China?
