And it certainly wasn't the first time he called for action to keep firearms out of the hands of would-be killers.

But Sunday's remarks following the Orlando nightclub shooting were the first to incorporate all three of those themes.

It was at least the 14th time that President Obama spoke to the nation in the immediate aftermath of a mass shooting — and the sixth time within just the past year.
