"Opposition forces in the rebel-controlled districts of Syria’s Aleppo said they will be using the Turkish Lira as the official currency in the areas under its control starting next month.
The self-imposed Local Council of Aleppo, declared the decision in a document issued earlier this week.
The Local Council of Aleppo was formed by opposition forces fighting to topple President Assad in some districts of the country’s economic capital after government forces retreated west.
Advocators of the decision say this choice was taken in response to the crisis that faces the Syrian pound, which has lost its value due to a number of factors including the western sanctions.
“This is the least thing we can do to thank neighboring Turkey for supporting our revolution. Trading with Turkish Lira will significantly boost Turkey’s economy”, a member of the Local Council of Aleppo commented.
However, informed sources confirmed the decision was spurred by the Turkish influence to deepen its hegemony over Syria’s second largest city and economic capital.
Turkey has been a staunch supporter of anti-Assad rebels since the uprising broke out in 2011, granting foreign fighters a safe and easy access into the Syrian territories.
Syrian authorities accuse Turkey of giving a helping hand to hardline fighting factions, including al-Qaeda Syrian branch, Jabhet al-Nusra, and the blacklisted the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
Video footages have been recently released by Turkish opposition showing government trucks full of weapons and ammunitions trying to cross the borders into Syria."
