US Carrier Group heads toward Korean Peninsula

The US has a long history of sending carrier groups off the coast of foreign conflict zones as a show of force. It's usually just PR

That was before there was a spoiled toddler in the WH.

He believes he does not have to operate within the constitution and he said he "loves war". Then there's those nukes he wants to use.

Well this is interesting. Don't think anything is going to come from it, but still interesting.

UPDATE 1-U.S. Navy strike group to move toward Korean peninsula -U.S. official
I would say that bringing a battle group that close to China is a very bad idea because China has air superiority in East Asia and China could easily blow everything American on the surface out of the water.

The principles of strategy require that you first establish air superiority before you strive for naval superiority because any air force can knock any navy out.

So sending a flotilla into harm's way like that is foolishness -- unless Xi said it was ok.

When you become a recognized military advisor and strategist we will take your comments to task.

DJT should ask Congress' concurrence to attack N.Korea.

There is no way around it.

They are not an immediate threat so there is no reason for an immediate strike without Congress' concurrence.

Or . . . the Americans and South Koreans are setting up an overwhelming aircraft, cruise missile, and artillery attack to destroy the nuclear capabilities of the NK as well as decapitate their leadership.
But without China's concurrence there is a very high risk that China's air force would blow the American surface warships out of the water.

Who said we're going to attack the DPRK?

Just out for a boat ride.

When has there not been a carrier battle group moving to or from the Korean Peninsula since the 50's? When?

Sheesh.

That's not necessarily true. Combined arms is ideal, but everyone of those ships has several heavy AA guns attached that can strike aircraft from quite some distance away. If they did need to interdict Chinese planes, the US has aircraft in South Korea and Japan, which also have their own air forces.

The greater threat are the land to sea missiles in possession of both China and North Korea. They are much cheaper and a salvo would have the same effect as an aerial swarming.

North Korea has the capabilities to destroy an isolated CSG. It's only 1 carrier and several frigates/destroyers. They have several hundred anti-ship missiles in their arsenal and more than enough planes to deliver them all. The carrier group would be mince meat to a swarm of 20 DPRK Mig-23 bombers.

I'll just be blunt. A carrier strike group isn't intimidating anyone. Maybe a small island nation in the Caribbean, but not two nuclear powered countries with the largest militaries on earth, thousands of missiles in their possession, and several hundred current generation aircraft.

I will half-agree with half of that.

China and N.Korea have huge land armies, yes.

But the main thing that makes China formidable is its vast huge air force.

It's army is not a major factor other than for anyone attempting to invade it, like Japan tried once and did not accomplish.

And N.Korea is bottle-necked into N.Korea by the South who have about as large an army as they do, so these two tribes of monkeys can fight it out again if they like, only this time it would be a draw unlike last time back in 1950-53.

N.Korea is fairly impotent against the USA.

But if China intervenes then the USN would have a major problem in East Asia because air power trumps seapower.

China's air power is world class and land based and is a match for anybody else's.

Location and distance favor China too.

Technically this is called interior lines. China can easily refuel and rearm their planes and launch them again. The USA cannot do this in East Asia.

The N.Koreans are the stupidest monkeys on this planet.

They are not a threat to anybody except to themselves.

That's some stupid ass shit. You are critically underestimating them.

North Korea has 1,200,000,000 million military personnel (third largest on earth), tens of thousands of artillery pieces, 1000 ballistic missiles, and a formidable arsenal of modernized tanks and aircraft. They also have nuclear weapons, chemical weapons, and advanced cyberwarfare capabilities.

Like I said, N.Korea is a land based force bottled-up in N.Korea by the S.Koreans in the south and by the Chinese in the north.

They have nowhere to go with their military gear.

Their missiles cannot hit sh!t.

You should of got a job at the pentagon, yiostheoy . With your arrogance and total disregard for facts, you would of fit right in.

I would advise DJ Trump to keep his carrier groups well outside of the range of Chinese land based air power.

Sending a carrier battle group into the coasts of East Asia is akin to the stupidity of FDR moving the US Pacific Fleet to Hawaii from San Diego where it belonged.
