OP also doesn't seem to have noticed that the Alabama masking law referenced in the story was overwhelmingly supported in the overwhelmingly Democratic state senate (33 to 3) and signed by Gov. Folsom --- also a Democrat.

This would be a few years after Gov. Arnall in the neighboring state of Georgia (another Democrat) was revoking the Klan's charter to exist in that state where it was registered, and roughly a decade after Gov. Long in Louisiana (yet another Democrat) warned the Klan leader that if he came to LA to start shit he'd be "leaving with his toes turned up".

From a contemporary report of that Alabama masking law signing:
